Birthday week and 10k!

This week turned out to be more exciting than I anticipated.  For a start it was a short week since Monday was Memorial day, and then I went to Ames for work training for a couple days and then it was my birthday!!  But let’s start at the beginning.

Monday:  Monday was Memorial day so I wanted to take advantage of not having to work by going for a morning-ish run.  I don’t know what it was but everything about this morning was not going well so I ended up getting a later start than I wanted plus I was in a bad mood.  It was warmer out than I would have liked and that didn’t help with the crankiness, so I had to force myself to keep going.  In the end I did 4 miles, which is 3-4 longer than I wanted to do so I am happy I stuck it out.  Besides it was a good way to tire out the dog so we could enjoy the rest of the day.

Tuesday: I did a very small arm workout, not even big enough to mention on here really.

Wednesday: Headed out at about 8 for the 3 hour trip to Ames for training starting at 11, and despite getting a later start than usual I did not run.  I thought about it and wanted to but didn’t get my act together in time to pull it off so I packed my running stuff and figured I would run that night.  However, throughout the course of the day I found a couple co-workers that also run and were planning on going out in the morning so instead I decided to just forgo running in the heat and go with them in the morning.  To fuel up I had some beef Teriyaki and tried sushi for the first time in my life.  I stuck to the shrimp and crab varieties so it wasn’t totally off base from what I usually eat.  The beef was really good though and it was even served on a cast iron cow!

Thursday:  Got up at 5 am to go for a run with people!! That was so cool, I never run with people!!  They went a little faster than my usual pace but I kept up and it was a good workout.  Because of routing we ended up doing 2.5 miles out of the 3 we were shooting for so that’s pretty close.  It was great to get up and get it done and then have all day to feel good.  I even had plenty of time to shower and get ready and didn’t feel rushed.  Good incentive to make a switch and run in the mornings all the time.

Friday:  Just a long day at work, I didn’t end up running because i was exhausted. I was hoping it would be an easy day so I could get to enjoying my birthday weekend, but after being gone for training so much lately I shouldn’t be surprised.  I did end up signing up for a 10k for Saturday morning after much waffling about it.  I didn’t want to run in the rain and I wanted to run with Hemi so he would be good for the day and I knew it was going to be hot.  But in the end the coworker I ran with earlier in the week won out and I signed up.  See, peer pressure can be a good thing! Also Adam and I had plans to go to Red Lobster for my birthday celebration that night so I figured if I ran I could eat guilt free.

Saturday:  Adam had to work all weekend so I just got up when he did to start getting ready for the race.  Hemi looked really sad as I left him (after getting all excited because I was putting my running gear on) so I promised him I would take him out tomorrow.  I stopped at Casey’s and got coffee and a donut (I deserve it, I’m going to run it off right?)  Ended up getting there way early because the town in was in is closer than I thought.  I usually go there from work not straight from home.   Oops.  Since I was such a late register, I didn’t get a shirt which was kind of a bummer but I can only blame myself really.  Found coworker and her friend and we ended up starting together, but like I said she’s a little faster than I am so after a little while I dropped back so I could finish without burning out at 5k.  It was a beautiful perfect morning but ended up warming up pretty fast so I was overheated from pretty early on but I chugged along.  After the 5k split people were pretty sparse since the 10k was a lot smaller than the 5k so after that I was on my own.

I do have to say this is the first time I agreed to take a map of the course along with me and I am glad I did because I ended up at two points not being sure of which direction to go and had to actually use it.  That slowed me down a little bit, especially the second time around cause I completely stopped a couple times to look the street signs and then try to read the tiny street names on the map.  In the end both times I chose correctly so I finished in still good for me time and was ready to head home.  That’s when my coworker told me that I probably placed and should hang around for the awards.  Say what?!?  Yeah I NEVER thought I would hear those words said to me.  But lo and behold, I ended up getting 3rd in my age group and I got a bronze medal. Now I can die happy saying that I placed in a race, albeit a small one but still I’m pretty stoked!

Saturday finished with shopping and eating at Red Lobster.  But I did get some pretty neat birthday gifts since Adam just had me pick them out from the store.  I got a Plyo box to do Plyo on and to use as the step for the Kayla Itsines workouts.  I also got a Kettlebell so I can do Kettlebell workouts and use it as a free weight and it’s more manageable than A’s super heavy dumbbells.  So I am really excited to use those!

Sunday:  I did promise Hemi we would go out, but it was my birthday and I was a little sore so I just went out for an approximately 3 mile walk in the morning while it was still mostly cool.  I am glad I did because he conked out the rest of the day.  Adam’s Aunt had lunch for everyone in honor of my B-Day so after eating our fill at lunch we came home to just hang out and relax.  It was still an amazing day out and I realized how embarrassingly white my legs have gotten while on my walk that morning so I decided to take H outside and hang out with him in the sun.  It was pretty hot and I felt like I was frying so I wasn’t out there long but I think they are better than they were before.  Hemi even chilled out and laid down outside in the shade for a little while. For those of you that don’t know him that is unheard of.  When he is outside he sniffs the ground and barks at it and whines and stares all over until he finds a bird/squirrel/dog/human/leaf to freak out about.  So it was nice to just hang out with him.

We finished the night with Pizza because it has been a while since I let myself have any and it was my only day to use for an excuse.   All in all it was an amazing weekend.  I was super happy about the 10k and the weather was perfect so I was outside as much as I could be and Hemi got out and enjoyed it too and we still relaxed and I got some other things around the house done.  The perfect birthday weekend.   I wish every weekend was that blissful.

On a more excited note, I have decided to to the Sioux Falls Half Marathon on September 11 and official training for that starts in a couple weeks!!  That will make the summer fly by, but it will be more interrupted than my previous cycle with more work and personal trips.

    • Woah, I totally missed this comment. Thank you I’m really excited. It’s funny because I was thinking how much I hated them while running because I love being anonymous but then I placed and I have had a change of heart!!
