Week 7 of Training for SLO

Happy week of Easter!! (I definitely did not just eat a bunch of cadbury eggs before typing that) So this week was another great training week, sadly it rained/snowed/wind never blew under 30 mph so I was forced to run on the treadmill all week.  It is so painful having a little wonderful taste of spring and then having it taken away.  I’m sure when the warm weather returns it will bring with it the lovely 100% humidity that makes you hate yourself.  I love the midwest!!  It was a tough week mileage wise, but I paced it ok so that I didn’t have a distinctively bad run where I had to energy left, so that is a huge improvement.

I ended up not doing a mid-week post because a portion of it was going to be talking about what shoes I should get next, but when I went to google what I currently had I found a pair that was not only purple but also on sale.  So since I knew they would work I bought them and that ended the debate before it even started.

Sadly the treadmill status means that I don’t have any running pictures, so I will just show pics of whatever I do have!!

Random picture of my dog because I don’t have anything else!!

Monday: 4 easy, consistent miles. I was happy that I was recovered enough from Saturday that I didn’t struggle on this.

Tuesday: 7 miles of speedwork. 2 mile warm up, followed by 4 miles of progression and then a cool down mile.  Since I have figured out the way to get steady runs consistent with no stopping and slowing down, now I need to learn how to do that on speed runs!  Yeah I am running faster for a part of it but I am also walking to recover instead of jogging the whole time and ironically that makes the total time slower than my other runs.

Wednesday: 4 miles of recovery.  Usually the day after a speed workout I am gassed and just can’t struggle through it, but this time I was ok and managed to make it the whole run and had a good pace the whole time!!

Thursday: Cross training!!  I really had to push myself to go get this one done, I had no motivation.  It was A’s birthday and we had chili bash for lunch, and it was a snowy day.  I didn’t even go in to work because the road was closed and my boss told me to just go back home.  So I was in total “not wanting to workout” mode but I forced myself and I am glad I did.  2:00 of planks in 3 sessions, 40 ab bikes, 25 push-ups, 25 sumo squats with a press, 25 squats, 20 donkey kicks, 45 weighted tricep things and 25 bicep curl things.  I don’t really know what those are called but I have seen them done a ton before.

Friday: 4 miles.  A little sore from yesterday, once again only in the legs.  Maybe I just don’t need to work out my legs?  Isn’t running enough?  Why not?

Saturday: 10 miles!!! The world half marathon championships were on TV so those were good motivation, and then I watched Flashdance on Netflix.  Both were pretty good at keeping me going and entertained.  I did 3.33 miles in my normal pace, and then picked it up a notch for each of the intervals → 3.33, 1.5, 1, .5.  I was definitely hurting afterwards and didn’t leave much in the tank so I feel good about that part.  I made myself run a couple of the miles at an incline, partly because it felt better on my knees and legs and it was good to work different muscles.  I drank a ton and foam rolled afterwards to try to ward off soreness.

Sunday: Rest day!! Just trying to stay loose and NOT eating easter candy while watching the amazing race and waiting for the walking dead.  Washed the coonhound and finally got him all tuned up and ready for spring.  He was starting to get dandruff-y and had more loose hair than usual so we knew it was beyond time.  He always looks at us like we are murdering him when the bath is happening but as soon as it is done he looks back to normal.

He was too sad to show you a pic during the bath.

So that was my week.  I did a lot of thinking this week and that led to a few new announcements.

  1. I signed up for a 10 mile race next weekend for my long run!! I am really excited, it will be fun practice and I will have pictures to show! I am supposed to do 11 so I will even get to practice warming up, which I don’t usually do.
  2. I really want to do a Relay race of some sort, preferably somewhere on a trail through some mountains.  I don’t have any desire to run a full marathon at once but I think it would be really fun to join a team and do some relaying, and it’s a great way to make new friends!!
  3. I am making it my life goal to go to one of Kara Goucher’s podium retreats.  Probably not this year because I think it will happen during a weekend that I will be in a wedding, but maybe in the next couple years.

So, I can’t wait until next week to tell you about the race I am really excited to get out somewhere local and meet people and attend an event!  Also after my long run on Saturday morning, my shoes came in the mail and I love the color!! I should have got two pairs and just stocked up!

My beautiful, purple new shoes!!!

P.S. I apologize for all the doggie pictures, but he is my child and so cute that I can’t not share them all.  If you are also a facebook/instagram/snapchat friend you get pics of them all day long.

  1. Great week! I would have lost my mind on the treadmill, nice work getting it all in! Cute shoes, what are they? I used to be a die hard Mizuno girl. I still miss them but they just don’t work for me anymore. Good luck with your race! I’ve never run a 10 mile race but want to, it sounds like the perfect distance. I would love to run a Ragnar kind of race one day. The trail ones sound pretty awesome too, well except for the camping part. 🙂

    • I think they are Wave Inspires? I started in Nike’s and after three pairs that caused debilitating pain in my feet I switched to these and they don’t hurt so bad, so I think I will keep them lol Honestly if 10 mile races were as common as half marathons, I would probably run that more, it’s a good distance without getting excessive. As for Ragnar, we should totally put a team together!! I don’t know many runners though so you might have to do all the leg work on that part and I will just show up. My parents have a small camper in Northern California, that’s gotta be better than sleeping in a van!!
